Don't Just Shop a Boat. Demo One. Your Complete ATX On-Water Demo Checklist

Boat show season is one of the most exciting times of the year — and if you found an ATX surf boat that caught your eye, that excitement is just getting started. But no amount of showroom lighting or spec sheets can replace what happens when the engine fires and you feel the boat move beneath you for the first time.

One of the most common questions we hear from first-time buyers is: what should I ask when demoing a wake surf boat? This checklist is your answer. Spring is the ideal time to schedule your on-water demo. The lakes are clearing up, summer is closing in, and your local ATX dealer is ready to put you behind the wheel. Whether you're a first-time buyer or upgrading to something with more wave, use this checklist to evaluate every detail with confidence — from the dock to the surf session.

Start at the Dock: Quality You Can See and Feel

The demo starts before the engine does. While the boat is still on the trailer or tied to the dock, walk around it slowly. This first pass tells you a lot about the craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into every ATX.

Fit, Finish & Materials

  • Inspect the gel coat finish for uniformity, depth, and gloss. ATX boats are built with premium gelcoat — look for crisp lines and clean color transitions.
  • Evaluate the upholstery — press into it, sit on it, feel the stitching. Marine-grade UV-resistant vinyl should feel substantial and well-constructed.
  • Check hardware quality: cleats, latches, hinges, and cup holders should feel solid throughout.

Boarding, Layout & Storage

  • Evaluate entry from the dock — step placement, walking design, and nonskid surfaces all matter when feet are wet.
  • Observe the seating arrangement in the cockpit and bow. Does the layout match your lifestyle — family days, friend groups, or serious riders?
  • Check seat back angle and surface depth for ergonomic support, and evaluate freeboard and seat back height for safety, especially if you boat with kids.
  • Open every storage compartment. Look for dedicated space for surfboards, wakeboards, skis, and ropes — not just general cubbies.

Leaving the Dock: Power, Smoothness & the Type-E Tower

The moment you ease off the dock and hit open water is one of the most revealing moments of the whole demo. Pay close attention to how the boat feels at low speeds before you ever open it up.

Note throttle smoothness and control as you leave the dock — transitions should be linear and predictable.

  • Evaluate engine noise level and drivetrain vibration from idle through initial acceleration. A well-tuned powertrain should feel confident, not harsh.
  • Raise and lower the Type-E Powered Tower. ATX's powered tower raises and lowers effortlessly — no manual wrestling, no awkward angles. Once it's up and locked, give it a shake: a well-built tower should feel completely rigid with zero rattle, even before you hit the water.
  • Once underway, engage Zero Off GPS speed control if equipped. Note how quickly it locks onto your target speed and how consistently it holds through turns and chop. Zero Off is a premium upgrade worth asking your dealer about — once you've experienced it, it's hard to go back.

Open Water: Handling, Ride Quality & Performance

Now it's time to push the boat and really feel what it's capable of. Run through each of these tests intentionally — this is what every summer day is going to feel like.

Acceleration & Planing

  • Accelerate from a stop and evaluate how quickly and smoothly the boat comes onto plane.
  • Note bow rise during acceleration — excessive bow rise affects visibility and is a sign of hull inefficiency. ATX hulls are engineered to plane quickly and level out without hassle.

The S-Turn Test

  • Execute a series of S-turns at moderate speed. Steering response should be immediate, proportional, and confidence-inspiring.
  • Evaluate body roll and overall stability through the turns. A well-designed surf boat handles crisply without feeling nervous or sluggish.

Ride Comfort

  • Cross through wakes from passing boats and note ride comfort — does the hull absorb chop cleanly or transmit it harshly?
  • Listen and feel for hull, tower, windshield, seat base, and dash vibration or noise. Premium construction should feel tight and quiet, with no flex or rattling at speed.

The ATXperience Control Center: Technology Built for the Water

While the ballast fills — which the GO System handles automatically — take a seat at the helm and explore the ATXperience Control Center. This is ATX's intuitive touchscreen command hub, designed to give you complete control without pulling your attention off the water.

  • Run through a full-screen demonstration with your dealer. Menus, settings, and controls should feel intuitive on the first touch.
  • Evaluate the instrumentation layout and accessibility. Can you adjust surf settings, ballast levels, and speed control quickly and without distraction?
  • Note ballast fill time and the smoothness of the system. Fast, even ballast is essential for consistent, high-quality surf waves.

GO System + TAPS 3T: The Technology That Sets ATX Apart

If there's one thing that separates an ATX surf boat from the competition, it's the combination of the GO System and TAPS 3T. When buyers ask which wake surf boat has the best wave technology, TAPS 3T is consistently part of that conversation. The ability to shape, adjust, and transfer a surf wave in real time — regardless of load — is what sets ATX apart on the water.

The GO System

Forget fumbling with settings while your rider floats in the water. The GO System does the work for you.

  • With a single button press, the GO System sets your cruise control speed and configures your TAPS plates automatically — optimized for surfing, wakeboarding, foiling, or skiing.
  • Evaluate the transition speed and accuracy. The boat should reach the correct surf configuration quickly so you spend more time on the wave and less time waiting.

TAPS 3T: Total Wave Customization

TAPS 3T (Tigé Adjustable Performance System) is ATX's proprietary trim system, and it's what gives you real wave adjustability across every load, every rider, and every condition.

  • While underway, test TAPS at both wakeboard and slalom speeds. Notice how different plate settings change the wake shape, size, and push.
  • One of TAPS 3T's biggest advantages: consistent waves regardless of boat load. Whether you're running with a full crew or just a few people, TAPS 3T lets you dial in the same style of wave every time.
  • Evaluate the wave's power and push. A great surf wave should have a clean face, defined, and enough energy to keep your rider surfing rope-free.
  • Test the switch from regular to goofy. The rider should be able to transfer the wave side to side independently — note the speed and ease of that transition.

Safety, Versatility & Letting Everyone Drive

A demo isn't complete until you've evaluated the boat the way you'll actually use it — with other people on board, different drivers behind the wheel, and real-world conditions in play.

  • While the surf system is active, confirm that the driver maintains full, confident control of the boat. Safety should never be compromised when the wake system is engaged.
  • Note sight lines and stern visibility from the driver's seat with riders in the water.
  • Let every legal driver in your group take a turn. ATX boats are built to feel intuitive for drivers of all experience levels — the technology should empower the driver, not overwhelm them.
